I Want to Be the Oprah of Menopause and That’s Ok
Yesterday as I was working on the launch for the My Bloody Hell membership, Mr. Impostor Syndrome tried to step in and steal my joy. He was asking me why I thought I had the right to claim ownership in the menopause space when I'm not a doctor, nor any other type of medical professional. He almost got me there, but then I stopped for a moment and really clarified what I am doing with the My Bloody Hell mission and brand. I'm holding space for women who are struggling with this complicated and sometimes debilitating thing called perimenopause/menopause. I am creating community, providing inspiration and sharing useful information. And while I've only recently launched the podcast, the response to My Bloody Hell has been exactly what I've hoped for; women saying thank you for being seen; women being grateful for the information they were looking for; women connecting with other women over shared experiences.
And that's when I realized, Oprah is a subject expert in nothing except being fabulous. She rose to fame by holding space for other people and asking questions. That's what I'm doing too, and like Oprah, I want to change lives for the better. Also, like Oprah, I am a journalist and an educator by training, so I'm using those skills in this new arena.
I’m not going to hold back from adding my voice and my energies to the menopause space simply because I don’t have a certain degree or qualifications. I’m bringing my authentic self, my talents, and my passions to the table and that is enough. Enough to create a podcast, a community and a difference where a difference is greatly needed.
